Buffalo Hump Retreat Wilderness Idaho

Located within the pristine Gospel Hump Wilderness, this property sits just below Buffalo Hump. Laying deep within the wilderness and accessed by a 4-wheel drive only dirt road.  In 1978, Congress recognized 200,000+ acres of undeveloped federal as the Gospel-Hump Wilderness. Elevations range from 1970 ft on the Salmon River to 8940 ft at the summit of Buffalo Hump.

The areas were used by the Nez Perce Indians long before settlers. As part of their seasonal subsistence rounds, they hunted game and fished the Salmon River. Then in 1898, an extensive vein was revealed at the base of Buffalo Hump. The discovery touched off one of the last major gold rushes in the western United States. Thousands of prospectors moved in. Remnants of placer mines, diggings, and abandoned boom towns are still evident today.


54± deeded acres of mountain land populated with pine forests, granite rocks and Hump Lake. One of a handful of private ownership’s within this vast primitive area in north central Idaho. The property is made up of the Virginia, Dice, Alligator and Improvement Lode mining claims. Moreover, all of which were patented in the early 1900’s.

The cabins run off solar power, with propane for the appliances and a back-up generator. Additionally, staying connected while there is doable as it offers the modern comforts of satellite television, phone and Internet.

A back county recreational area with endless possibilities for outdoor adventures! Fish for trout from your own lake or take a short hike to numerous lakes. Cabins & Shop

The main cabin sits atop a rock knoll that allows for a panoramic view with emphasis on Hump Lake. It has three bedrooms plus a sleeping loft, a full bathroom, full kitchen, dining room and living room with a cozy wood stove. The extensive wrap around deck with a soaker hot tub enhances the viewing experience, especially while star gazing at night.

The second cabin features a large deck with a soaker hot tub and overlooks the lake. The interior has one bedroom plus a sleeping loft, one full bathroom plus the kitchen and great room. All you would need indoors because, it is the outdoors that will be calling your name.

The shop is a great location to keep your recreation toys and property maintenance items. Additionally, there is a small living quarters with a kitchenette and a wood stove. As an added bonus, a poured foundation is ready for a new building of your choice . Furthermore, with some work, there is possible opportunity to have a helipad or landing strip.
